Changes of Glucose Tolerence in Chronic Vacor Ingested Rats

Abstract
In order to elucidate the hormonal status in chronic Vacor ingested rats and to clarify spontaneous recovery from diabetes, the insulin response to glucose load in Vacor ingested rats was studied at 2 and 6 months after Vacor ingestion.
The results were as follows;
1) In two month observation groups, body weight showed no significant difference between control and Vacor ingested groups (single administrated group: group I , two times administrated group: group II) . Significantly elevated blood sugar levels were observed at 1 and 2 hour after glucose load in group 11 comparing with group I and controls.
Insulin levels at 30 minutes after glucose load was significantly reduced in group lI comparing with group I .
2) In six month observation group, all rats showed normal fasting blood sugar levels but marked glucose intolerance with deficient insulin response were noted in 2 cases, normal glucose tolerance with normal insulin response in 1 case, and mild glucose intolerance with delayed insulin response in 2 cases.
Above results suggest that Vacor diabetes mellitus may be different from streptozotocin and/or alloxan induced diabetes in point of reversibility.
